A major new eco-tourism attraction, Redwoods Glowworms, is set to open in Rotorua in September 2025. This multi-million-dollar expansion is being developed by the operators of the popular Redwoods Treewalk, an iconic attraction in the Whakarewarewa Forest.

The centerpiece of this new offering is a 70-meter-long “eco-cave” that will house over 5,000 native glow worms. This custom-designed environment aims to create a breathtaking and immersive experience for visitors. Key features of the eco-cave include:

  • Bio-integrative Technology: The cave is being built with a unique blend of natural and artificial rock formations, incorporating cutting-edge bio-integrative technology to ensure the glow worms thrive in a carefully crafted habitat.
  • Controlled Environment: The 5-meter-high tunnel will feature cascading waterfalls and a climate-controlled environment maintained at a cool 15°C-18°C, providing ideal conditions for the glow worms.
  • Immersive Experience: Visitors will be suspended above reflective water, surrounded by thousands of glow worms, creating a “living constellation” effect. This experience is designed to be a “breathtaking new journey” that complements the existing David Trubridge-lit nightwalk at Redwoods Treewalk.
  • Conservation Focus: The project emphasizes conservation, highlighting how these remarkable creatures contribute to the delicate balance of nature in the Redwoods Forest and reminding visitors of the importance of sustainability efforts.

This expansion is the culmination of about five years of planning and research, with the business partnering with Expedition Earth to create the attraction. It’s expected to be included with Nightlights tickets and offered as an optional combo for daytime Treewalk visitors.

This new attraction further solidifies Rotorua’s position as a leading tourism destination, offering unique and captivating experiences that blend nature, culture, and innovation.
